Cache Index V2.3 July 1996 WHAT'S NEW
Cache Index V2.3 July 1996
Only small changes in this release. CI now checks for Netscape V2 FAT
before looking for V1 so if an old V1 FAT file is left lying around it will
not confuse CI. (Only of significance to new users!)
Made headings smaller on index page (they looked OK on my hi res monitor but
a bit gross on lower res monitors :-) )
Added an explanation in the 'About Cache Index' page about how to view pages
complete with their original graphics.

Cache Index V2.2 June 1996
A Directory Scan facility has been added.
The +d option can be used to make Cache Index scan a
directory looking for Netscape cache files and create an index of them. This
option is intended for when there is no FAT file available. eg if someone has
saved a bunch of files out of a cache directory. There are several
limitations to this mode: firstly because there is no FAT file, it is not
possible to determine the original URL of each file. Also it is necessary for
Cache Index to make a guess about the file type based on the file extension.
At present it assumes .GIF and .JPG are graphics files and anything else is
text. It it gets it wrong, it is not a major problem, it just means the file
ends up in the wrong list. Another limitation is that only files whose name
starts with M0 are considered.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cache Index V2.1
V2.1 now presents the cache pages in chronological order. ie the most
recently viewed pages are at the end. This makes it a lot easier to locate
a particular page - especially when you have a large cache. As this is by
far a better way to list the pages, there is no option to disable this.
To achieve this meant that Cache Index has to read all the FAT entries into
a buffer and then sort them. This is slightly slower and imposes a limit of
700 text or graphics items maximum. The sorting takes less than 5 seconds for
the 700 entries.
Some of the command line options have had their default changed. What I
consider the most desirable operating modes are now the default.
There is a new command line option to specify the maximum number of entries
on a page. The option is the letter L followed by a number. eg l28 or L28
Cache Index now probes further into each text file looking for the TITLE (up
to 15 lines). This means 99.9% of pages are now shown with their title.
The presentation format for the text file pages has been improved by using
a table instead of separate paragraphs. This puts the entries closer together
and reduces the amount of scrolling required.
